Join us for a showing of Waste Land (2010), an award winning documentary set in Rio de Janeiro's Jardim Gramacho, the world's largest garbage dump. Waste Land documents the nearly three-year experience of artist Vik Muniz as he collaborates with the "catadores," pickers of the dump's recyclable materials, to create photographic images of themselves out of garbage.
The film is the winner of numerous honors, including the Audience Award for World Cinema Documentary at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival and an Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary Feature.
Sponsored by Global Interdisciplinary Programs and the Department of History and Art History.
